Chapter Two.

He was in trouble. He was in deep trouble. Unless Suzanne didn’t find out. David was in his car, driving home. He’d spent minutes making sure that Erika’s smell wasn’t on him anymore, that there was no trace of infidelity to be found anywhere on him. His heart was beating wildly. When he’d checked his cell phone, there’d been three missed calls. One from his best friend Andrew, and two from his future wife.

David was so anxious that he passed two red lights. When he passed the third one, he heard sirens from behind him. Biting his lip, he stopped the engine and looked in the rearview mirror. He shut his eyes when he saw who was coming out of the police car.

“Oh, no,” he whispered to himself. The young man was poised as he came to David’s car and tapped on his window. David rolled down the windows and smiled.

“Hello there, Kyle,” he nervously said. Kyle lowered his sunglasses and stared at him.

“David,” he said. “Are you aware that you ran a red light?” His eyes darted toward David’s forehead which was becoming more and more soaked with sweat by the second.

“Yeah,” David answered. “I’m sorry about that. Just got a lot on my mind, that’s all.” Kyle raised an eyebrow.

“Must be really important to have you ignoring my little sister’s calls.” David cringed.

“I…My phone was on silent. That’s why I didn’t pick up.” There was a line of worry that came on Kyle’s handsome face. He leaned his head into the car window and stared straight into David’s.

“If you hurt my sister, I swear to God that I will have you arrested for anything I can think of. And I’ll make sure you spend weeks behind bars.” David gulped and nodded.

“I understand,” he said. Kyle stood up straight and took out a pen. He wrote a ticket and gave it to David. “You’re giving me a ticket?”

“You ran a red light.” Kyle turned and walked back to his car. David watched as he sped off and let out a breath of relief. It quickly turned to fear. There was no way in hell that he was going to do the right thing and tell Suzanne now. There was no doubt in his mind that she would tell her older brother and he would come after him.

Erika silently drank her cup of coffee. It was three twenty-five in the afternoon, but she needed energy. She was thinking about David, and how he had so willingly gotten into bed with her. He’d missed her, and she knew he meant what he said about loving her. But ever since he was a cute nerd in middle school, he wasn’t one to cheat on somebody. What had happened to him? She laughed at the thought.

Before he left her apartment, he made her promise that she wouldn’t tell anybody, lest word gets back to Suzanne. She promised, because that was the least she could do. Then he kissed her in the most passionate way, and she knew he was serious when he said he was going to leave Suzanne. She really didn’t want him back as much as he wanted her.

Well, good riddance, she thought. They’d known each other since sixth and if he didn’t know what she was capable of by now, then he was just an idiot. She couldn’t just tell him to go away after one day together. But she couldn’t keep him. She stared at her open bedroom door and suddenly her phone rang. She was reluctant in picking it up, because she was tired and didn’t feel like talking anyhow. The answering machine picked it up.

This is Erika. Don’t leave a message unless it’s important because I don’t like wasting my time. She was always so nice. The answering machine beeped.

“Ignoring me already, Erika?” the male voice said. It was David. “Just wanted to say that I love you and what I said was true. I’ll do it as soon as I can. Please call me back when you can. Bye.” The only thing Erika could do was stare at the answering machine. She remembered why she dumped him in the first place. It was because he was so clingy and needy and so quick to lose his temper. It took her months to get rid of him, and it was probably going to take a whole lot longer now.
