Part Three.

“Erika, wait,” David called after her. She grinned as she thought, perfect. She continued to walk and he grabbed her arm, forcing her to turn around. She still had tears in her eyes. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean to offend you.” She looked at her feet. Two years, a fiancée, and he was still the sympathetic dope she knew. “Will you look at me?”

“I can’t,” she stated with a melancholy in her voice. “I understand, David. I’m out of your life forever. I can deal with that. Good-bye.” She pushed his hand off her arm and headed out the door once more. As she began walking down the street, she realized that David was still following her.

“Don’t you have a car?” he shouted. She didn’t look back.

“I walk.” He caught up to her and walked beside her.

“Well, then, can I at least drive you home? It’s the least I could do.” She paused for a second.

“I suppose,” she answered him. They walked to David’s silver BMW, and Erika wondered if his fiancée was an affluent woman, because as long as she knew David, he never had much money.

He unlocked the passenger side, and held the door open, beckoning for Erika to climb in. She did, and he closed the door after her. He quickly walked around to the driver side, and sat down. He looked at her as she continued to wipe away the tears from her eyes.

“I’m assuming you live in the same place?” She nodded, not looking at him. He started the engine and ten silent minutes later, they were in front of her apartment building. She quickly opened the door and stepped out of David’s car. She leaned down and put her head in the car door window after she’d closed it. The wind blew her hair, which framed her high cheekbones.

“Since we didn’t get a chance to eat, would you like to come up and maybe have an early lunch with me?” He seemed hesitant.

“Erika…,” he said. “I don’t think so.” She put her hands up.

“I know you don’t have any feelings for me anymore, David. I’m simply inviting you up for food. That’s all.” He sighed and nodded.

“Let me park my car first.” Erika backed away as David swerved roughly into the nearest parking space. In a matter of seconds, she was climbing the stairs into her apartment building and he was following her.

She unlocked the door and stepped inside, looking back at David, who seemed apprehensive still. He slowly stepped inside, looking around. It seemed to Erika as if he was thinking that something would happen that day to ruin his life.

“Make yourself at home,” she said to him, heading for her bedroom. “I’m just going to change into something a little more comfortable.” His face displayed utter shock at her words. She grinned.
